SHIVER

Shiver is a body of work, made at night. The night is something that really fascinates me. All the darkness, the lack of sight, it makes me really uncomfortable. The fear I experience is what triggers me to make certain photographs. This is what fascinates me, how your emotions can affect your work. In this series, I focus on the emotion 'fear'. 2018 – 2020

FREQUENCY

In the summer of 2019, I followed my younger brother around with my camera. We were spending time at the swimming pool of a house we were watching over. I found out that my brother knew exactly what to do when I pointed my camera at him. He already knew what I wanted to capture before I could even think of it. He understood perfectly how to position himself in the frame before my eyes. I had never experienced such a connection between the two of us before. For a brief moment he put aside his tough, adolescent character and replaced it with everything I wanted to see. The outcome was a collection of photographs that seem to be one. A detailed description of something that cannot be described by words, cannot be seen and yet can be felt beyond boundaries. An intimate family portrait.

ABOUT

‘Sterre Arentsen is a Dutch Artist based in Berlin and the Netherlands, specialized in photography. In her work she explores the relation between humans and nature, but people rarely appear in her pictures. Instead, she shows lifeless objects that bear a trace of humanness, often carried by an air of melancholy. Various analog techniques allow her to extract more from a scene than meets the eye at first glance, in a sense turning the world inside out.’

My memories have never been vivid. When I look at old photos of myself, I am often left astonished. As if I am looking at someone else entirely and seeing the scene for the first time. This sensation is something I search for during my work process. I want it to be intuitive to such an extent that I will not be able to remember how, when and where I shot something subsequently. Colors and shapes form the foundation of surrealistic associations, filling my archive with timeless memories.
