A series that portrays my search for situations that provide me with an ‘unheimlich’ feeling; the sense that something is off. Most of these works were created at night, when the unseen awakens. But photos shot in the daylight turn out to fit in seamlessly with them. Searching for the hidden mystique. 2022 – 2023

Even though I surround myself with them, I find myself looking at digital images of plants more often than I look at actual plants. And by ‘look’ I mean more than just taking a glimpse. I mean observing their details, their uniqueness, really taking in their essence. There is something inherently unnatural about putting small excerpts of nature in plant pots and putting them on display. It’s like puzzle pieces of different images being forced together. Most times the composition it creates is just an awkward reminder that soil and concrete don’t combine. Sometimes though, I see a beautiful mosaic. 2018 – 2022

Shiver is a body of work, made at night. The night is something that really fascinates me. All the darkness, the lack of sight, it makes me really uncomfortable. The fear I experience is what triggers me to make certain photographs. This is what fascinates me, how your emotions can affect your work. In this series, I focus on the emotion 'fear'. 2018 – 2020

In the summer of 2019, I followed my younger brother around with my camera. We were spending time at the swimming pool of a house we were watching over. I found out that my brother knew exactly what to do when I pointed my camera at him. He already knew what I wanted to capture before I could even think of it. He understood perfectly how to position himself in the frame before my eyes. I had never experienced such a connection between the two of us before. For a brief moment he put aside his tough, adolescent character and replaced it with everything I wanted to see. The outcome was a collection of photographs that seem to be one. A detailed description of something that cannot be described by words, cannot be seen and yet can be felt beyond boundaries. An intimate family portrait.

‘Sterre Arentsen is a Dutch Artist, currently based in Helsinki. Her work is drawn from the observation of the relation between man and nature. She captures moments that have already passed, fragments that have outlived their time. A faded hopscotch court, hidden in a dark alley on the outskirts of the city, where no one plays anymore. A lost puzzle piece on the ground, separated from the whole to which it once belonged. Clear scenes with sharp edges, or abstract frames where color holds everything together. Various analog techniques allow her to extract more from a scene than meets the eye at first glance, in a sense turning the world inside out. People rarely appear in her images. It’s mostly lifeless objects that convey humanity in their place.’
